2 Reasons To Hire A Licensed Electrician To Work On Your House

If you are going to have some electrical work done on your house and you are an experienced DIYer, you may think that you can handle all the electrical work, or that you can just hire your local handyman to help you. The problem with that is that unless you are a licensed electrician, you shouldn't mess with any serious electrical work. You really need to have a professional do all your electrical work for you. There are several reasons why.

Building Codes

One reason to hire a licensed electrician to do all your electrical work is that your state and city are going to have building codes that all construction and renovation work must meet. Those codes are designed in order to keep you and your house safe. If you are just having an outlet installed or rewired, you probably don't need to have the work inspected to make sure that it's up to code, but your electrician should make sure that the work would meet the code if it were to be checked. That can mean making sure that the new wires going into your house is of the correct gauge and is installed as far away from other infrastructure as it should be.

Homeowner's Insurance

Another reason that you should have a licensed electrician doing all electrical work for you is that you may run into problems with your homeowner's insurance. You may even invalidate the insurance if you do the work yourself, unless you are an electrician, because if the work isn't done correctly, your house can be at risk of having the entire electrical system shorted out or even having an electrical fire. Even if you don't invalidate your insurance, if you have to file a claim because bad electrical work caused a problem, your insurance company may not pay out the full claim amount or may not even pay out any of the claim at all. However, if you can show that the work was done according to all building and safety codes in your location and by a licensed electrician, then your insurance company likely won't be able to decline your claim because of that.

If you are going to have any kind of electrical work done at your house, you need to make sure that you have a professional come in and do it for you. Hiring a licensed electrician just makes a lot of sense.
